π Narrative Tenses: Telling Your Story
Level: B2 | Time: 5 min | Focus: Grammar β past simple, past continuous, past perfect
π From Sourov’s world: I was working at the casino when the call came. My father had died. I had been carrying my phone in my pocket all evening β I don’t know why, I don’t usually. When it rang, I already knew. That is a sentence built from three past tenses, each doing a different job. This is how stories work in English.
π Three Tenses, Three Jobs
“The call came. I answered. I left work.”
“I was working when the call came.” (β the call interrupted the work)
“My father had died.” (β this happened before the call, establishing context)
