4 Clue Types to Look For

1. Synonyms / Restatement

The unknown word is explained nearby in simpler words.
“She was reticent β€” always quiet and reluctant to speak in public.”

2. Antonyms / Contrast

The word contrasts with something you know.
“Unlike his gregarious sister, he preferred to stay home alone.”
(gregarious β‰ˆ opposite of staying home = sociable)

3. Example / Illustration

A list of examples hints at the category.
Flora β€” roses, oak trees, wild grass β€” covered the hillside.”

4. Word Form / Root

Break the word into parts you know.
“un-predict-able” β†’ un- (not) + predict + -able (can be) = cannot be predicted.
