I Have Lived in Four Countries
Chittagong. Sydney. Paris. Réunion. Four countries, four chapters of one life. When someone asks ‘Where have you lived?’ — present perfect is the only honest answer. Not ‘I lived in France’ (I’m still connected to it). Not ‘I live’ (that’s now). The tense exists because the connection still matters.
The present perfect connects past experience to now. Use it when the time is NOT finished, OR when the result matters more than when it happened.
I have lived in four countries. (connection to now)
She has taught English for three years. (ongoing)
Have you ever left your country? (life experience)
❌ “I lived in Sydney.” → finished, no current link
✅ “I have lived in Sydney.” → still part of who I am
❌ “I worked at The Ivy in 2014.” → past simple: finished time!
✅ “I have worked in hospitality.” → general experience, time open
Present Perfect or Past Simple?
1. I ___ (visit) Paris in 2018. visited (past simple — finished time: 2018)
2. She ___ (teach) English since 2015. has taught (present perfect — ongoing)
3. Have you ever ___ (try) sushi? Yes, I ___ (try) it last year. tried / tried — first: experience (ever=life); second: past simple (last year = finished time)
