💡 Today’s Idea

Small talk is short, friendly conversation about everyday topics: the weather, work, the weekend. It builds relationships.

📖 From My Experience

Eighteen years behind a bar and on a restaurant floor taught me one thing about small talk: it is not small. A guest who feels genuinely seen — not just served — becomes a regular. At Merivale in Sydney, the sommelier who remembered a guest’s last wine order, the barista who knew their name: that was small talk made into loyalty. I was always the one who remembered. It is a skill, and English small talk has its own rules.

📚 Small Talk Phrases

Opening:
How are you? / How’s it going? / Lovely day, isn’t it?

Topics:
Did you have a good weekend?
Have you been busy lately?
What do you do?

Keeping it going:
Oh really? / That’s interesting! / Tell me more.

Closing politely:
Well, it was nice talking to you!

✏️ Try It! (2 minutes)

Have a short conversation — with a partner, or out loud by yourself. Use these steps:

1️⃣ Open with a question.
2️⃣ Listen and respond with Oh really?
3️⃣ Ask a follow-up question.
4️⃣ Close politely.
