My Family: Family Words in English

Level: A1 · 5 minutes · Young Learners & Beginners

💡 Today’s Idea

Learn family words in English: mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, daughter, son.

📖 From My Experience

My family stretches across three continents. My mother is in Bangladesh. My wife Vanessa is French. Our daughter was born here in La Réunion. My brother is in Dhaka. Family vocabulary is personal — it carries the weight of real relationships. When I was learning French, the word for daughter — fille — became more than a word the day she was born.

📚 Family Words

  • 👩 mother — my mother is called Ruma
  • 👨 father
  • 👧 daughter — I have one daughter
  • 👦 son
  • 👩 sister
  • 👨 brother — my brother is younger than me
  • 👴 grandfather
  • 👵 grandmother

✏️ Try It! (2 minutes)

Draw a simple family tree. Write the English word next to each person.

Then say: My ___ is called ___.
