Level: B1 · 5 minutes · Teens & Adults

💡 Today’s Idea

Top-down listening: Use your knowledge of the topic to predict and understand.
Bottom-up listening: Focus on individual words, sounds, grammar.

📖 From My Experience

I started my career in Australia unable to understand the Australian accent at speed. Australians swallow half their words. I had two choices: panic, or predict. If I knew the context — a guest was ordering wine — I could guess the gaps. Red or white? How many glasses? I did not need every word. I needed the shape of the conversation. That is top-down listening. Bottom-up came with time, with exposure, with eighteen years of listening in noisy restaurants, casinos, and stockrooms.

📚 How to Improve Your Listening

  1. Before listening: Think about the topic. What do you expect to hear?
  2. While listening: Don’t translate every word. Focus on key words.
  3. After: What did you catch? What was missing?
  4. Practice tip: Watch films with English subtitles. Pause. Repeat. Remove subtitles.

✏️ Try It! (2 minutes)

Listen to one minute of a podcast, song, or video in English. Write down 10 words you heard clearly. Then check: were you using top-down or bottom-up listening?

🎯 Quick Quiz

You use your knowledge of the topic to guess words you didn’t hear. This is:
