ELT365 · Day 190 — Monologue Tasks: Describe, Narrate, Argue

July 7, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Monologue tasks — timed descriptions, personal narratives, mini-presentations — build fluency and the ability to sustain extended turns. Most classroom speaking is dialogic; monologue needs deliberate practice.

Example — “Describe a place you know well for one minute without stopping.” No interruptions, no questions — sustained speech is the aim.

Try — Give learners a photo and 30 seconds to prepare a one-minute description. Record or peer-count the seconds of silence. Aim to reduce them.
