ELT365 · Day 190 — From mechanical to meaningful drills
Idea — Mechanical drills (simple repetition or substitution) fix form; meaningful drills make learners choose words based on real information. Move from mechanical to meaningful so practice connects to actual use.
Example — After substituting "in the kitchen / in the garden", ask "where's YOUR phone?" — now the answer is true.
Try — Take a substitution drill and add one prompt that requires a true, personal answer. Mechanical first, meaningful second.
