ELT365 · Day 179 — Grading comprehension questions
Idea — Comprehension questions should move from easier to harder: gist first, then detail, then inference, then personal response. Scrambling this order adds unnecessary difficulty and confuses less confident learners.
Example — Q1: What is the article about? (gist) → Q2: When did the event happen? (detail) → Q3: Why does the writer use the word ‘catastrophic’? (inference).
Try — Take five comprehension questions from a coursebook unit. Sort them: gist, detail, inference, evaluation. Does the original order match? Resequence if it doesn’t.
