ELT365 · Day 216 — Managing Noise Levels

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea

Noise in a language classroom is not a problem by default — productive noise (learners speaking in the target language) is the goal. Manage type, not volume.

Example

Raise your hand silently to signal wind-down. Learners copy; noise drops without a word from you.

Try

Observe your next class. Count seconds of productive learner speech vs seconds of off-task chat.
