Idea — Linking words (however, therefore, in addition) signal logical relationships between ideas. Discourse markers (right, anyway, so) organise speech. Both are often memorised incorrectly — learners need meaning, not just a word list.
Example — ‘Although’ signals contrast within one sentence; ‘However’ contrasts two sentences. They cannot be swapped. Learners who memorise both as ‘contrast words’ often misuse them.
Try — Test whether your learners know the difference between ‘although’ and ‘however’ by giving both sentence positions. If confusion exists, teach the grammar, not just the word.
