ELT365 · Day 198 — Genre-Based Writing

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Genre-based writing teaches that every text type has social purpose and cultural conventions. Learning a genre means learning its purpose, audience, and form.

Example — A job application has a purpose (get an interview), an audience (hiring manager), and conventions (formal register, quantified achievements).

Try — With learners, analyse one genre they will need. List its purpose, audience, and three conventions. Then draft a short example.
