ELT365 · Day 194 — Genre in writing — text types matter

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Each text type has a predictable structure, register, and social purpose. Teaching the genre explicitly gives learners the skeleton before they fill it with language.

Example — A complaint email follows: opening reference → specific problem → impact → requested action → polite close. Once learners see the pattern, the language fills itself.

Try — Choose one writing task you teach. Map the genre structure explicitly with your class before they write a word.
