Idea — Eliciting means drawing language from learners rather than presenting it. The teacher asks, waits, and lets learners arrive at the answer.

Example — ‘This word is the opposite of generous. What do you think it might be?’ beats telling. The cognitive effort of retrieval aids retention.

Try — Choose five words you would normally present directly. Write an eliciting question for each — one that leads learners to the answer via context or contrast.
