ELT365 · Day 180 — Designing a Receptive-Skills Lesson from Scratch

July 7, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — A receptive-skills lesson follows: lead-in → pre-teach blocking vocabulary → gist task → detailed task → response or production. Each stage has a specific cognitive purpose — skip one and the sequence breaks.

Example — Jumping from pre-teaching directly to detailed questions removes the gist stage: learners search for facts before they have a mental frame for the whole text.

Try — Take a text you use. Map each stage against the sequence above. Which stage is missing or conflated with another? Redesign that stage only.
