ELT365 · Day 179 — Extensive reading — building fluency

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Extensive reading means large volumes of self-chosen, largely understood text read for pleasure. It is the most reliable route to reading fluency (Nation’s research). No tasks, no comprehension checks.

Example — A B1 learner reading one graded reader per week for a school year gains measurably in vocabulary size, grammar accuracy, and reading speed.

Try — Start a class reading log. Learners record title, pages read, and one sentence about it each week.
