ELT365 · Day 175 — Inferring Vocabulary from Context
Idea — When learners meet unknown words, context is the first tool — using the surrounding sentence and paragraph to infer likely meaning.
Example — ‘The price was exorbitant — she put it back immediately.’ ‘Exorbitant’ can be inferred as ‘too high’ from the consequence alone.
Try — Mark five unknown words in a text. Cover definitions. Ask learners to guess meaning from context, then state the evidence they used.
