ELT365 · Day 173 — Unknown words while reading

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — When learners hit an unknown word, options are: guess from context, skip it if non-essential, or look it up. Teaching this triage stops one word from halting the whole text.

Example — In "the path was strewn with leaves", a reader can skip "strewn" and still follow the story.

Try — Mark three words in a text as "guess", "skip", or "check". Show learners that not every word deserves a dictionary.
