ELT365 · Day 171 — Text Types and Genre
Idea — Genre shapes reader expectations. Knowing a text is an editorial, a recipe, or a letter changes how readers process it from the first line.
Example — ‘Dear Editor’ activates different expectations than ‘Method: combine the flour and butter.’ Genre tells readers what is coming.
Try — Give three short texts with the headings removed. Ask learners to identify the genre from language and layout alone. Discuss the clues they used.
