ELT365 · Day 164 — True / False / Not Given — the tricky third option

Idea — ‘Not Given’ is not ‘False.’ False means the text contradicts the statement. Not Given means the text is silent on it. Learners confuse these constantly.

Example — Text: ‘The museum opens at 9.’ Statement: ‘The museum closes at 5.’ Answer: Not Given — the text says nothing about closing time.

Try — Write one True, one False, and one Not Given statement for a text you use. Test a colleague. Where do they stumble?
