ELT365 · Day 163 — Extensive Reading: Quantity Over Analysis

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Extensive reading means reading large amounts at a comfortable level for pleasure and fluency — not stopping to analyse. Volume drives vocabulary growth and reading speed.

Example — ER programmes with 20-minute silent reading slots show measurable gains in fluency over a term when learners choose their own books.

Try — Introduce a 10-minute silent reading slot. Learners choose their own text. No tasks, no testing — just reading. Track pages per week.
