ELT365 · Day 155 — Gist Listening: The One-Question Rule

Idea — A gist task asks one broad question answered by the whole text. Its purpose is to give listening a reason before the detail work begins — not to test memory.

Example — “What is the general topic of the conversation?” beats six true/false questions on a first listen; learners cannot attend to everything simultaneously.

Try — Set one gist question, play an audio clip, take hands-up answers. Resist replaying until the gist is agreed.
