ELT365 · Day 154 — Bottom-Up Processing

July 15, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Bottom-up processing builds meaning from individual sounds, words, and sentences upward — decoding first, inference second.

Example — A learner hears ‘bi-cy-cle’ and constructs meaning phoneme by phoneme, then word by word.

Try — Give learners a sentence with one unknown word. Ask them to ignore it, read the rest, and guess the meaning from context.
