ELT365 · Day 152 — What ‘receptive skills’ means

June 28, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Receptive skills — reading and listening — are how learners take in language. They receive meaning without producing it. Both require active processing, not passive absorption.

Example — A learner reads a news article without speaking a word, yet the brain is predicting, inferring, and checking meaning throughout.

Try — Think of the last time you learned something in a foreign language. Were you reading or listening? What made it easy or hard?
