ELT365 · D172 — What makes a good reading text

Idea — A good classroom reading text has a genuine communicative purpose, real information value for the learner, and a level that is reachable.

Example — A real flyer about a local event beats a fictional company brochure written for coursebook practice: it has purpose, it is credible, it is useful.

Try — Rate your next reading text: does it have purpose, information value, and level match? If one criterion fails, decide whether the task compensates.
