ELT365 · Day 201 — Genre shapes writing

June 22, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Every genre — email, review, narrative, report — has conventions of structure, register and layout. Teaching the genre's shape before writing gives learners a frame instead of a blank page.

Example — A formal email opens with "Dear…" and a reason; a text to a friend does neither.

Try — Show two texts of the same genre. Ask learners to list three shared features, then use that list as their writing frame.
