ELT365 · Day 199 — The model text: what it is and how to use it

June 25, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — A model text shows learners what a good version of the target text looks like before they write their own. It sets the standard and provides language they can adapt — not copy.

Example — Before asking learners to write a formal complaint email, you read one together, highlighting the opening, the problem statement, the request, and the close.

Try — Choose a model text for a writing task you are planning. Read it with learners first. Ask: ‘What does the writer do at the start? In the middle? At the end?’ Extract the structure before they write.
