ELT365 · Day 185 — Drilling — why and how
Idea — A drill is a short, focused repetition practice used to establish pronunciation, form, or chunks in learners’ mouths. Choral drill first (whole class together), then individual. Keep it brisk; pace replaces boredom.
Example — Target: ‘I haven’t been there yet.’ Choral: all repeat. Then nominate: ‘You — again.’ ‘You — again.’ Ten repetitions in 90 seconds.
Try — Pick a sentence your class produced incorrectly last week. Run a 60-second back-chained drill: start with the last word, add chunks backwards until learners say the full sentence correctly.
