ELT365 · Day 182 — Speaking vs talking — what classroom tasks do

Idea — Learners talk all day. Speaking tasks give them specific language to practise in a communicative context. A task without a communicative goal is a drill, not a speaking activity.

Example — “Discuss your weekend” = talking. “Persuade your partner to visit your hometown, giving three concrete reasons” = a speaking task with a goal.

Try — Rewrite one discussion prompt from your course book to include a clear communicative goal and a measurable outcome.
