ELT365 · Day 169 — Selecting Reading Texts for Class

Idea — A good classroom reading text is appropriately levelled, genuinely interesting, and generates language worth noticing. All three matter. A boring text at the right level teaches nothing useful.

Example — Criteria: is the topic relevant to learners’ lives? Does it contain target language? Is it long enough to practise a skill but short enough to complete in class time?

Try — Before choosing your next reading text, write down your answer to three questions: Why this topic? What language will learners notice? What will they do with it after?
