ELT365 · Day 167 — Reading for gist: skimming
Idea — Skimming is fast reading for the overall idea — running the eyes over a text to grasp topic and purpose. It is a survival skill learners rarely practise because school taught slow, total reading.
Example — Skimming a news page in ten seconds tells you which story to read fully; you process headlines and first lines only.
Try — Give a text and 30 seconds: "What is it about, and is it for or against?" Time it strictly to force skimming.
