ELT365 · Day 159 — Skimming — getting the main idea fast

June 28, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Skimming means reading quickly for the general idea, not detail. Readers move fast, taking in headings, first sentences, and key words. Not every text rewards it equally.

Example — Skimming a news article in 30 seconds to decide if it is worth a full read — most of the text is deliberately skipped.

Try — Give learners 45 seconds with a long text. Ask: what was it about? They should not have time to read it fully.
