ELT365 · Day 159 — How accents affect comprehension

July 3, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Learners tuned to one accent — often British or American — struggle with Scottish, Irish, Indian, or Australian speakers. Accent exposure is a teaching goal, not a side-effect.

Example — A learner who scores 90% on a BBC listening task may score 40% lower hearing the same information from a Glaswegian speaker.

Try — Find one listening resource with a non-standard English accent and use it next week.
