ELT365 · Day 152 — What Receptive Skills Actually Are

July 6, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Receptive skills — listening and reading — involve taking language in, not producing it. Learners receive far more than they produce, so these skills build the base for everything else.

Example — A beginner who watches one English sitcom episode daily builds an ear for rhythm and chunking long before they can name a grammar rule.

Try — Ask learners: last 24 hours — how much English did you hear or read? How much did you speak or write? Discuss.
