ELT365 · D170 — Intensive Reading: When Every Word Matters

July 14, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Intensive reading means reading every word carefully to extract full meaning. Best for instructions, contracts, and exam passages. Time-consuming — use it purposefully.

Example — Reading a rental contract. Every word matters. Skimming missed the clause about early exit fees; intensive reading catches it.

Try — Give learners a 150-word text with one misleading sentence. Do they find it by skimming or only by intensive reading? Discuss which skill the task demands.
