ELT365 · D159 — Setting gist tasks that work

July 8, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — A gist task must be answerable from one listen or read, simple enough to capture overall meaning, and specific enough to require real processing.

Example — Vague: ‘What is the text about?’ Better: ‘Does the writer recommend this product?’ The second demands a judgment, not a retrieval.

Try — Take a gist question from your coursebook. Rewrite it as a clear, single-answer task answerable in one exposure. Test it on yourself first.
