ELT365 · D158 — The lead-in — context before the text

July 8, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — A lead-in activates prior knowledge, builds interest, and prepares students for the topic. It comes before any task and never reveals the text content.

Example — For a listening about food markets, ask: ‘Have you bought anything at a market recently? What? How did you choose it?’ Topic activated; content hidden.

Try — Write a 60-second lead-in for your next lesson text. Rule: no summaries of the content — only questions about the topic from the learners’ own lives.
