ELT365 · D152 — What receptive skills are

July 8, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Receptive skills — reading and listening — involve decoding meaning from input. The learner receives language; they do not need to produce it.

Example — A student watches a short video clip and answers one question about the topic. They processed real language without speaking a single word.

Try — Give any learner a short text. Ask them to tell you one thing they understood after one read. No writing. No speaking. Pure decoding.
