🌿 Describing People: Adjectives for Appearance and Personality

⏱ 5 minutes · PPP · Vocabulary & Speaking

💬 From my own experience: Managing a front-of-house team at The Ivy in Sydney meant I needed to brief staff on VIP guests before they arrived. ‘She’s tall, well-dressed and very direct’ — three adjectives that prepared everyone for the interaction.

🎯 By the end of this 5 minutes, you can:

use 12 key adjectives to describe someone’s appearance and personality accurately.

Language Focus:

tall/short/medium heightslim/stocky/well-builtdark/fair/grey hairconfidentreliableoutgoing/shyorganisedpatient

📖 Quick Explanation

In English, appearance adjectives come before the noun (a tall man) or after be (He is tall). Personality adjectives work the same way.

Appearance: tall · short · slim · well-built · dark-haired · fair · elegant · smartly dressed

Personality: confident · reliable · outgoing · patient · organised · direct · friendly · serious

Order matters when you stack adjectives: opinion → size → age → colour → origin → noun
Example: a tall young French woman ✅ not a French young tall woman
