Advanced Vocabulary — Nuance and Precision

📖 From My Life

Learning French to C1 as an adult taught me the power of precise vocabulary. In French, habiter is where you live long-term. Demeurer is formal and literary. Résider is administrative and official. Three translations of “to live” — all different. English has the same richness. The difference between a B2 and C1 speaker is often just precision.

🎯 Language Focus

Sad vs precise sad → melancholy, grief-stricken, despondent, forlorn, sombre
Happy vs precise happy → elated, content, euphoric, gratified, buoyant
Walk vs precise walk → stroll, stride, amble, trudge, wander, march, saunter
Principle Don’t just choose the ‘bigger’ word — choose the more precise word

✏️ Quick Practice — Try It!

1. Which is more precise? “She was sad.” vs “She was forlorn.”

“Forlorn” ✓ — suggests loneliness + sadness specifically.
2. Find a more precise word: “He walked slowly through the park.”

He ambled / strolled / wandered through the park ✓.
3. When would you use “content” vs “elated”?

Content = quiet, lasting satisfaction. Elated = intense, sudden joy. Context determines. ✓.
4. Find a more precise synonym for: “The lesson was good.”

stimulating / illuminating / thought-provoking / rewarding ✓.

💡 Your 5-Minute Takeaway

Don’t collect synonyms — collect meaning differences. Ask: “When would I use THIS word and not THAT one?” That’s the C1 question.
