Modal Verbs for Advice: Should, Ought To, Had Better

My first mentor at Merivale said: “You should taste before you pour. You had better know your list. And you ought to remember every regular.” Three modal verbs, one shift. I learned all three that night.

| ought to | Same, slightly formal | You ought to revise before the test. |
| had better | Urgent / warning | You had better arrive on time. |
should / ought to / had better + base verb (no -s, no -ing, no to after had better)

Rewrite using the modal in brackets:
- It’s a good idea to drink water. [should]
