Colors in English — A Rainbow Activity for Young Learners (A1)

🎙 From the classroom: My daughter is learning to name the world. Every day it’s a new colour, a new shape. ‘Papa, blue! Blue water!’ That moment — when a child connects a word to the world — is exactly what a good A1 lesson should create. Not test. Create.

💡 The Idea

Learning colors in English: red · orange · yellow · green · blue · purple · pink · brown · black · white · grey. The key for young learners: always connect the word to a real object or image. Never present colors in isolation. ‘The sky is blue. The grass is green. The sun is yellow.’

🗣 Example

🔴 RED: an apple · a stop sign · a heart
🟡 YELLOW: the sun · a banana · a taxi
🟢 GREEN: leaves · a frog · vegetables
🔵 BLUE: the sky · the sea · blueberries
🟣 PURPLE: grapes · lavender flowers · an aubergine

🎯 Try It Now!

🎨 Color Hunt Game!

Look around the room (or outside). Find:

  • Something RED → ‘The _______ is red.’
  • Something BLUE → ‘The _______ is blue.’
  • Something GREEN → ‘The _______ is green.’
  • Something YELLOW → ‘The _______ is yellow.’

Then draw and colour your favourite thing from today’s list!

✅ Check Your Answers

✅ There are no wrong answers — any object of that colour is correct! The sentence pattern is: ‘The [object] is [color].’ Extra challenge: ‘I can see something red. It is an apple.’ This practices the full sentence structure.
