⚙️ Collocations: Make vs Do — Never Mix Them Up Again

As a barista, you make coffee. As a manager, you make decisions. But you do the cleaning, not make it. This distinction cost me in my first English job.

📖 The Key Rule

MAKE — creating, producing something / relationships:
make a coffee, make a mistake, make a decision, make a phone call, make friends, make money, make an effort, make progress

DO — actions, activities, work, tasks:
do homework, do the dishes, do business, do research, do exercise, do a course, do your best, do harm

Tip: there’s no logical rule — learn them as chunks.

🍷 From My Shifts

Every night behind the bar: I made cocktails, made recommendations, and then did the stocktake. At the end I made sure everything was locked and did the handover notes for the next shift.

She ___ a mistake in the order and had to redo it.

I need to ___ the dishes before I can relax.

He ___ a lot of money in the hospitality industry.

Can you ____________ me a coffee? (make/do)

I need to ____________ some research before the lesson. (make/do)

📝 Make or Do?

Choose the correct verb for each:
1. ___ a course   2. ___ a plan   3. ___ your best   4. ___ an appointment   5. ___ the shopping
