YL · Managing Energy: Transition Activities
Idea — Young learner energy is not a classroom problem — it is a classroom resource. The challenge is directing it. Transition activities regulate energy between high-focus tasks and physical activities.
Example — After a running dictation (high energy), use a quiet colouring or tracing task (low energy) before moving to reading. The transition activity regulates the group, not just the individual.
Try — Map your next YL lesson’s energy levels: high, medium, low. Add a transition activity wherever two high-energy tasks appear in a row. It takes 90 seconds and saves 20 minutes.
