ELT365 · Day 174 — Note-Taking While Listening

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Note-taking while listening is a productive academic skill, but it competes with comprehension at lower levels. Teach it explicitly: what to note, how to abbreviate, and how to review.

Example — Learners listen to a short talk and note only numbers: dates, quantities, prices. Second listen: fill in what the numbers refer to. A structured scaffold for note-taking.

Try — Design a two-stage note-taking task. First listen: note only one category (names, numbers, locations). Second listen: add context. Debrief: what made it manageable?
