ELT365 · Day 169 — Scanning: Finding the One Fact You Need
Idea — Scanning succeeds when the reader knows exactly what to look for and refuses to process anything else. The target is named before the search begins.
Example — “Find the price of the ticket.” Learners know the shape of a price before they open the page. Everything that is not a number with a currency sign is skipped.
Try — Name the target first: “the departure time.” Then start the clock. Anyone who begins reading from the top has not scanned.
