Articles: A, An, The — or Nothing?

“I go to the school every day” or “She is the teacher I like”
— but in English, we often drop the article entirely. French and English handle articles very differently!
The Four Choices
| Article | Use when… | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a | singular, indefinite, consonant sound | I saw a bird. |
| an | singular, indefinite, vowel sound | She is an engineer. |
| the | specific, both speaker & listener know which | Please close the door. |
| Ø (nothing) | general meaning, proper nouns, routines | I love Ø coffee. She goes to Ø school. |
Common French-Speaker Errors
❌ I like the music. (= a specific piece of music)
✅ I like Ø music. (= music in general)
❌ She is the doctor. (unless you mean a specific, known doctor)
✅ She is a doctor. (her job)
Examples in Context
- There is a café near my flat. The café opens at 7 am.
- I study Ø English every morning before Ø work.
- She is an architect. She designed the building on the corner.
- The Indian Ocean is beautiful. I love Ø swimming.
- I go to Ø school by Ø bus. The school starts at 8.
