📖 From My Experience
When I started reading legal documents for my regulatory appeal in French and English — Ofqual guidance, the Equality Act, CNIL articles — I had to learn to read strategically. The documents were 40–80 pages. I could not read every word. Skimming told me which section applied to me. Scanning found the date, the reference number, the clause. Detailed reading came only when I had isolated the relevant paragraph. This is the strategy of a forensic reader. It applies to academic texts, news articles, and exam passages equally.
📚 The Three Strategies
- Skimming: Read the title, headings, first sentence of each paragraph. Time: 30 seconds.
- Scanning: Move your eyes quickly across the page looking for a keyword, number, or name.
- Detailed reading: Read slowly and carefully. Take notes. Re-read difficult sentences.
- Good readers choose the right strategy for each task.
