Talk about imaginary situations in the present or future — and what would happen
From Sourov’s world: I sometimes catch myself thinking: if I didn’t leave Chittagong, where would I be now? I wouldn’t have spent 18 years in Sydney hospitality. I wouldn’t have become a sommelier, or learned to pull the perfect espresso, or managed a team of 15 during a packed Saturday night at the Star Casino. Life would be completely different. The second conditional is the grammar of imagination — talking about situations that are not real right now, and asking: what would happen if?
📚 Language Focus
Meaning: The second conditional describes a hypothetical (unreal) situation in the present or future. We are imagining — not describing reality.
Form:

Important: We use were (not was) with I/he/she/it in formal English: If I were you, I would apologise.
CCQs: Is this situation real? → No, it’s imaginary. Are we talking about the past? → No, the past simple here shows it’s hypothetical. Can the situation change? → Yes (unlike the third conditional).
💡 Examples
- If I didn’t speak French, I would struggle in La Réunion. (I do speak French — imagining the opposite)
- If my English were still terrible, I wouldn’t be teaching it now.
- What would you do if you had to move to a new country tomorrow?
- If I were a restaurant owner, I would hire multilingual staff.
- She would travel more if she had more annual leave.
