💬 My first year in Sydney: I was not a native speaker. I read a lot. But articles — a, an, the — still tripped me up daily. A colleague once gently pointed out: “It’s the Ivy, Sourov, not an Ivy.” Small words. Big difference.
Articles: A, An, The
One (singular) — first mention — before consonant sounds
I bought a book.
One (singular) — before vowel sounds
I ate an apple.
an hour (h = silent)
Specific — both parties know which one — second mention
The book I bought was great.

Reveal Answers ▼
- a / the
- The / Ø
- an / Ø (or “the work” if specific)
- the / Ø
✅ Takeaway: New info → A/AN. Known info → THE. General truth → Ø (nothing). Sound, not spelling, determines A vs AN.
